Happy new year first,

My question is: Can rod or round bar be machined for openings on vessel? There are two packing boxes on vessel, with 15"OD and 10"ID. Do this kind of openings have to conform to UG-14 too?

Thank you

Jeff

JEFF,

what is the material of the rods and bars?
if the material is produced under the specification of bars (See Section II-A) then you have to meet UG-14 and also its limitations.
Sometimes materail is not produced under bar specifications such as SA-105 rods but people normally call it rod/bar materail, but UG-14 is not applicable to such rods nad bars.
Please correct me if I am wrong somewhere.

Jeff,

Sorry I forget to see UG-6(b) that says forged rod or bar may only be used under the limitations of UG-14.
So UG-14 is a must in your case.

Thank you Javed for your reply,

UG-14b seams get the flange waived to me. Am I right?

Jeff,

You are correct, flanges are waived out as far as UG-14(b) requirements are concerned.
Prior to addenda 2005, use of rod and bars was only limited to flange rings, frames for reinforced openings, stays and staybolts. Code cases 2155 and 2156 were used for the construction of cylinderical parts made from rods and bars.If you see Interpretation VIII-1-92-95, it does not allow to make shells from rods and bars, be cautious that this interpretation is no longer valid because UG-14 has been revised to permit rod and bar use for shells.
