hello,everyone,
i have a puzzle about the understanding of "plate and pipe over 24 in. O.D." in QW-461.9 .
you know, i am preparing the welder qualification for welding the T type joint between insert plate and sleeve with the diameter less than 24 in. and now i have some welder with the quailification 2G,3G,4G. so i am wondering if I use it to cover that joint per qw-461.9.

ASME makes a distinction between plate/pipe at the 24" diameter because with a diameter that large, the surface is essentially flat like plate whereas when you get to smaller diameters, curvature becomes more of an issue.

If your welder qualified 2G, 3G or 4G using plate, he can weld pipe with ODs 2-7/8" to 24" in the flat position with any of those, or flat and horizontal using a 2G qualification.

Thanks,JustinT ,

Per your meaning, the qualificaiton on 2G,3G and 4G together only cover the flat and horizontal position in welding the joint between the pipe with ODs less than 24" and the shell plate. so these welders can't weld that joint completely,Is that right ?
