Dear friends
Please note that the design for nuclear is by analysis and not by formula (hence PV elite type softwares cannot be used to meet ASME Sec III (I have assumed NB class1)

You can use any FEA software - to name a few ANSYS, Msc NASTRAN , ABAQUS, COSMOS, CAST3M , SAP IV or even your own (non commercial) but validated software.

Geometry including thickness will be input and deformation and stresses will be output. You have to use SCL and demonstrate that various criteria given in NB3000 are met. In case of not meeting then geometry or thickness or both may have to be changed as the case may be.

Thanks.
Is there any helping stuff for design according to SEC. III -NB especially about "various criteria of NB-3000 to satisfy".Because the code languagr is not user friendly also there are not much details as compared to SEC VIII.

Regards !

Formal training from experienced persons is the best solution

May be some books like " Companion Guide " by K.R.Rao, lot of published literature in Nuclear Engg and Design and other journals of Trans of ASME; Lot of background papers published on various issues in various forums, conferences and journals.

Specific issues can be discussed in the forum (not under software) but under ASME Sec III NUCLEAR

With regards

Dear Sir,
I reached to this forum while searching for design of BEM heat exchnanger as per ASME Sec-III in google.

I want to design BEM type Vertical HEat Exchanger as per TEMA Class "c" and ASME Sec-III Sub Section ND for both Shell side and tube side.
I dont know about ASME Sec-III. What is inside..! How it is differ from ASME Sec VIII Div 1 or 2?
What is diff between sub sec ND & NB?
Can I design this exchanger using PV Elite2010? This design is meant for estimation.

Please suggest or kindky explain more about this code ASME Sec-III.

Regards,
BJP

I would like to clarify that NB is for class 1 equipments. Design by analysis is mandatory in case of NB. Allowable stress is as per Table:2 A of sec II part D. The allowable stress table for ASME Sec III ND (class 3) , Sec III NC and Sec VIII Div1 are same. But this does not mean that designing as per 3 codes is same.
As a preliminary estimate you may use PV Elite and calculate thickness as per Sec VIII Div.1
But you can not address servcie loadings Level A, B, C and D in Sec VIII Div.1 a ssuch classification are not there.
Moreover, I understand you do not have experience in Sec III ND and may be do not possess one. Then how will you address other issues of material, welding, inpsection and NDE. Hence you should purchase Sec III ND first. If you are through in Sec III ND, Sec VIII Div.1 and Pv Elite, you may be able to use PV Elite as a tool (like excel / calculator) to do prelimary estimate
Further support design shall be as per Sec III NF class 3 for ND equipment. In short sec III ND is a different code with different set of rules and Sec VIII Div.1 can not substitute the same.
Please refer to my earlier posting in which I ahve suggested formal training and reading background literature are essential to learn Nuclear code requirements

With regards
