Hello,

Does the code give a solved example for flange stress calculations per appendix 2? I am writting an spread sheet for solving the equations and this would be helpful.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum McKenna,

For our design workshop I have performed some detailed sample calculations for loose and integral flanges. They should be more or less accurate, at least I have checked them with two different programs and with a manual calculation. If you are interested I can provide you with them.

Michael

Dear Mr.Frohnert,

Sir, i want to design custom body flange using software(PV-elite) according to ASME B16.47 Series A. After run with this software we found that the hub the hub taper is >0.33. could you advise or guide me how to reduce the hub taper and appreciated if you can provide manual calculation.

Thank you.

Faizol,

Are you trying to verify design of B 16.47 flange with PV-Elite or trying to design a custom flange?

If using B16.47 flange, no need to check the design.

Chances are quite high that your design fails if you try to verify a standard flange design.

Regards

Faizol,

I would like to add that it is my observation that if a standard ASME B16.5 or B16.47 flange is designed as per Appendix 2 it is very likely to fail on 2 criteria:-

1) the ASME B16.5 or B16.47 flange thickness will be inadequate and will have to be increased in order for the flange to pass Appendiz 2 calc.

2) The hub length will have to be modified.

Nevertheless, please note that in the first place ASME VIII-1 exempts standard ASME B16.5 or B16.47 flanges from calculations in the first place as Sanjeev has already pointed out. What this means is that "UNMODIFIED" flanges certified to ASME B16.5 or B16.47 can be employed in your pressure vessel with them satisfying Appendix 2 calculations.

regards,

jehan
