First, you need some basic knowledge about the ASME Code applications. You may start with the book "The ASME Code Simplified", follow this link: http://books.google.com/books?id=kvPbbJ ... ME#PPP1,M1.
Second, you need to decide on what stamp you need. Here are examples of ASME certificate scopes:
A-2. Assembly of power boilers at the above location and field sites controlled by the above location.
PP-2. Fabrication and assembly of pressure piping at the above location and field sites controlled by the above location
S-2. Manufacture and assembly of power boilers at the above location and field sites controlled by the above location.
Remember: PP certificate is for boiler proper piping only. If you have A or S certificate you do not need PP certificate.
Important: you need to select the Authorized Inspection Agency. Your AI and AIS will be your best consultants.
Good Luck.

PP is for Boiler Piping only. Both S or A stamps cover the scope of the PP stamp. The PP stamp does not cover the scope of either S or A stamp and is usually used by the companies constructing pressure piping only. A-2 or S-2 is the A or S Stamp scope classification, not another stamps . Examples:
S-1. Manufacture and assembly of power boilers at the above location only
S-2. Manufacture and assembly of power boilers at the above location and field sites controlled by the above location.
S-3. Manufacture and assembly of power boilers at field sites controlled by the above location
This classification depends of your company choice and is not important at this point. You will discuss it later with your AIS.
I already gave you the source of info: "The ASME Code Simplified". You also need to buy ASME Code Sections I, IIA, IIB, IIC, IID, V, IX, and B31.1 and start reading those. There is no cheap and easy way to success.

Well, why don't you call for an AI? May I suggest to send an e-mail to OneTuvBv and ask to be contacted by the AI closest to your shop?

Rapture,

this is not really precise.

There are different scopes for all the stamps. Some include piping. For example:
S-2. Manufacture and assembly of power boilers at the above location and field sites controlled by the above location.

This allows for the construction of complete boilers including the pipework in shop and field. This stamp includes also the permission to farbricate a pipe spool, e.g. feed water section, and stamp it "S" Part instead of "PP", or even installation of piping spools on site, whioch would normally be the scope of "A" stamp.

The PP scope includes the DESIGN RESPOnSIBILITY for Boiler External piping sections, which is not possible in the A-scope. Boiler parts may not be fabricated under PP, only piping.

The special about the A scope is that it includes the authorisation to do the complete boiler assembly including hydrotest. However, the S-stampholder taking the responsibility for the complete boiler shall extablish the test pressure.

Clear?

Dear Rapture,

in PG-109.3 (2010ed) indicated that the PP stamp holder may fabricate other parts of boilers, such as superheater, waterwall,or economizer headers, where complete design requirements are provided by others.

it make me a litter confuse.
