Dear all,

Reference: ASME Section VIII Div:01-Appendix-1-4 (f): Design of Heads With ts /L < 0.002

is it mandatory as per code to use above mentioned clause in appendix 1-4 to design knuckle of a toriconical head?

Please help.

Regards

1-4|(f) rules are only applicable to Torispherical and Ellipsoidal heads when ts/L is less than 0.002 but not less than 0.0005 and design temperature is less than 371C.
These are not applicable to the Toriconical heads even if ts/L < 0.002. If, say, ts/L is less than 0.002, even then UG-32(h) does not invoke rules of Appendix 1. It only invokes 1-4(d) for the design of knuckle portion (not because of ts/L < 0.002) and invokes 1-5(g) when half apex angle exceeds 30 degree.

Dear Javed Sir,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I understood it now.

My L/r ratio of knuckle portion of toriconical heads comes out to be 26.11.
what M value should we use?

Please help.

It is intersting to see L/r to be 26.11, can you please let me know following parameters;
D= inside diameter of the conical head as shown in figure 1-4(e)?
r= inside knuckle radius?
half apex angle?

I am in doubt about L/r equal to 26.11.

Dear Javed sir,

Tank is subjected to static head of 10mtrs only.
we have to submit as per ASME section VIII Div:01

shell ID:3450mm
Shell thk at cone to shell attachment:5mm
Cone Large end ID: 3450 mm
Cone half apex angle: 85 deg
Cone inside knuckle radius at large end : 230mm (knuckle at large end only)
Cone inside diameter: 3109.057mm (Di = D-2r(1-cosalpha))
now L= Di / (2*cosalpha)
L=6006.236mm
L/r = 26.11

Please help.

Dear Srinivasan Sir,

The half apex angle is 85 degree.

we have recommended client to keep it down to 75 deg.
(there are limitations at site which keep limit on the min cone half apex angle)

ASD23789,

You cannot determine the value of M with L/r = 26.11. You can neither extrapolate the table to get M value.

Now you need to go to U-2(g). You can opt either FEA, consult some other design Code/book,or a proof test as appropriate with subject to the Acceptance of your AI.
