Hello all,
Thank you for your answers.
To be honest i am confused now because i recieve mix interpretations.
In my understanding note under figure is stating that dimension of t1 "or" t2 shall be not less than the smaller of...... This means that only one of them should meet this requirement. This is how we did. According to inspectors from Canada we are wrong. I though that i can establish one minimum fillet dimension for t1 (or t2) using this requirement and then use the second requirement of t1 + t2 not less than 1.25tmin to establish second fillet dimension for t2 (or t1).
But the fact is that in UW-16(d) there is one difference which is missing in notes under figure: dimension of t1 "or" t2 for each weld shall be not less than the smaller of.... The question is: Is the wording "for each weld" forcing us to make both fillet welds with the same minimum throat size dimension of 0.7 x tmin? (in our case tmin=3mm)
If we read UW-16(d) note carefully we can see that "the welds" may be any desired combination of fillet, single bevel and single J-welds. This is represented by figures UW-16.1 sketches (i), (j), (k) an (l). I thought that wording "for each weld" is reffering to combinations just like one note under Figure UW-16.1 (i) applies to all.
But i am not sure of this right now. Using tmin=3mm we have:
t1 = 0.7x tmin = 2.1mm
1.25 x tmin = 3.75mm
so from t1 + t2 not less than 1.25 tmin , t2 = 1.8mm
This is how we did but theoretically we could make t1 even bigger (because note says "not less than") and t2 smaller and we would still fullfil both requirements and i doubt that this is the way how it should work. This is why i think that Code is trying to establish minimum fillet size for both welds.
I also agree that Code works in a way that we should read the text first and illustrations are only represanting the words of the paragraph. But the fact is that wording "for each weld" is miising there and that got me confused.
Just would like to recive a confirmation if both welds need to have the same minimum fillet size.
Thank You
