Hi,

I need determine whether a rupture disk is required for a client's manufacturing tanks. The tanks are 30,000L and will be used to make a cosmetic. The tanks are 40 psig/FV rated. They will be CIP-ed. They have open 4" vents and much of the compounding will be done with the manway open. They may need to pressurize the tanks to get flow out of the bottom nozzle started, but will ammend the design later. I am trying to determine if a relief device, in this sanitary design case, a rupture disk, is required based on the fact that the tank is code stamped. I'm wondering if it is required regardless of the fact that the tank will be vented all the time. The code seems ambiguous to me on this. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

mariad 2010,

Your question "is the vessel required a relief if it is vented all the time?"

My answer is " this is a Jurisdictional requirement and not a Code requirement."

For Code stamped pressure vessel installed in Illinois and the vessel is open to atmosphere a relief valve is not required.

I hope this will help you.

thanks, leem, that does help. how do you find out if it is a jurisdictional requirement in the client's state? also, do you know where it says it in the code that a psv is not required? thanks!

mariad2010,

Every States of the Union (meaning USA) that adopted ASME B&PV Code has enacted a law which they called "Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act" for installation and inspection of Boiler and Pressure Vessel.

Again, these rules defined what vessel to be inspected and one cited example is a pressure vessel open to atmosphere is exempted from having a relief valve and exempted from inspection, a pressure vessel containing only water under pressure for domestic supply purposes are exempted from inspection by the Rules and Regulations of the State. There are rules also for a pressure vessel located in public assembly a 5 cubic ft and 250 psig is exempted from inspection. If you know where 's the final destination of your pressure vessel then you can ask the enforcement authority of that States of their B&PV Rules and Regulations.

What I was trying to explain to you it is Juridictional requirement not a Code requirement for this type of vessel.

UG-125 states "presure relief device need not to be supplied by the vessel manufacturer and it is the responsibility of the end user that the required protective device is properly installed".
