Can anyone tell me that the only way to join an intermediate head to shell is according to Fig. UW-13.1 (e) ?
Is it possible to butt weld the shell to the external side of the intermediate head, like a skirt?
Thanks in advance
Gianni

Hello Gianni,
Of course it´s possible, but since a dished head has no welding end on the convex side for a butt weld I suppose you want to use a forged ring. This design requires, however, a more detailed analysis and is more expensive than the method described in UW-13.1(e). That´s the reason why it´s not the common way to attach intermediate heads.

Gianni, do you mean something like in Fig UW-13.1(i)? It's a shoddy way of welding things, not recommended (or even forbidden if my memory serves me well) in 13445. But I can't see anything against it as far as compliance with SecVIII-1 is concerned.

The manufacturer of this Reactor submitted a drawing where the shell is directly attached to the convex side without a forged ring. Is it possible to use this kind of joint?
Can I consider it a butt weld joint?
ASME VIII par UW13 (b) just says that " Heads shall be attached to the shell with a butt weld or as illustrated in the applicable Fig.UW13.1 sketches..."
On which basis can I reject his attachement detail?

Thanks again

You can't reject it (as long as it's not a special service)- it does comply with SecVIII-1. However, you may argue against it: there is no access to the root, if you were to radiograph it, there's no simple way to repair a defect, it's an invitation to a fatigue crack in a cyclic service, drainability/ventability is at least problematic etc.
