Dear Experts

Base Material - ASTM A131- EH36 x 25.4mm (Thk) x Single V
Weld Process - SMAW / Weld Position - 3G-Uphill
All Mechanical Tests & Impact Testing( -20 deg celcius ) passed. But Hardness Value exceeds allowable range

Query:-
1) Is it mandatory( AWS D1.1 / ASME Sect IX )to conduct Hardness Test?
2) Does the PQR become void when hardness value exceeds allowable range?

Please share your expertise asap.

PQR hardness testing is not required by code. how do you know the allowable range (unless your project spec specifies so)
BTW what is the hardness value you got?

raghurambathula;

I don't completely disagree with your answer, but maybe it could be better stated that hardness testing is not required by the Qualification codes mentioned by the original poster.

In my experience, hardness requirements are normally dictated either by the constructing specification (as you already mentioned) OR by invoking something like NACE for sour service works (example only).

ASME BPVC SECTION IX QW-100:Other Sections of the Code may specify different requirements than those specified by this Section. Such requirements take precedence over those of this Section, and the manufacturer or contractor shall comply with them.

According to the above clause, the hardness valve is mandatory if construction of weldment have requirements about hardness.
am i ritht ?
