ASME Sec VIII Div 1, UW-31 Tack welds, whether removed or left in place, shall be made using a fillet weld or butt weld procedure qualified in accordance with Section IX. Tack welds to be left in place shall be made by welders qualified in accordance with Section IX, and shall be examined visually for defects, and if found to be defective shall be removed.

Attention, the last reply is applicable to Section VIII-1 only.

Other COnstruction Codes are treating this matter differently, Section III for example. I suggest to consult the Construction Code for attachment welds.

Thank you very much for your replies.
However in Sec VIII it does not state that a welder must be qualified at all in order to put in bridge tacks just that the Procedure must be qualified.
Am I reading this correctly?

clint,

I have seen this interpreted both ways and each time from two separate A.I.s.

I would suggest that you consult with your AI or jurisdictional authority.

I see the following statement under UW-31(c):

Tack welds to be left in place shall be made by welders qualified in accordance with Section IX, and shall be examined visually for defects, and if found to be defective shall be removed.

Thanks,

That could be interpreted as those tack welds that are just temporary & will be removed could be made by an unqualified welder, huh?

To get a Code Interpretation, you have to submit a technical inquiry to the ASME B&PV Committee.

In Section VIII Div.1 yes. Provided they are welded following a qualified WPS and completely removed.
I would have concern whether an unqualified welder is able to read and follow a WPS.
However, the Welding Engineer for example, could be not a qualified welder but he can read and follow the WPS, his weld could be horrible but can't hurt the base metal and once it is completely removed there is no problem.
