Hi,
We are fabricating a pig launcher as per ASME section VIII division-1 and it is code stamp(u-stamp) job.

We want to use API 5L GR. X60-SAW pipe material for fabrication of main barrel.
Does code allows to use this material for code stamp job. If so, as per which section of UG, code allows to get U-stamp?

The API pipe fabricated with the addition of filler metal(in SAW process). As per UG-8 and UG-15, it seems, pipe fabricated from addition of filler metal and with outside ASME material not allowed.

Need clarification/suggestion for the above mentioned query????

Hi,
if it is a Code stamp job, API 5L GR. X60-SAW pipe material for fabrication of main barrel can not be used, since it is not listed in Section II Part D with a stress values for VIII Div. 1.
UG-10 may be a help, but it is difficult to apply in this case.

Since The API pipe fabricated with the addition of filler metal(in SAW process), pipe fabricated with addition of filler metal can not be used for the shell of a vessel, except when it is U-PART stamped by the pipe manufacturer. This is most likely not available on the market.

I recommend to replace the material by ASME SA- material. The Authorized Inspector should be contacted for assistance.

Best regards

Dr. Kölbl

Hi,
The gouging(removing filler metal) and rewelding is acceptable practice to meet code requirement?

Different of opinion with code experts and AI?????

Sure, you can remove the weld and say it's just a plate formed by somebody. But in such a case you need an MTR for the plate. So first contact the manufacturer of the pipe and ask for the original MTR of the flat product. Good not to forget about forming data (temperature)- might be needed to fullfill UCS-79.

Welds to pressure boundary that are completely removed afterwords are permitted provided they are made following qualified WPS (should be written somewhere in the Code :-), therefore you have to obtain WPS and supporting PQR as well. Mauro Gonzaga

Gonzaga, can you please clarify? It's something new for me. Do you mean that a material cannot be reused from a welded structure even if it can be fully recognized?

I mean that: e.g. temporary welds such as dogs or tack welds welded to keep a shell couse rolled by subcontractor not stampholder may be accepted although welded by a non stampholder provided welds have been made following qualified WPS and completely removed (by the stampholder)

That's pure abstraction. What if I use a welded pipe as shell and I make a nozzle passing thru the longitudinal weld of the shell? I'm remowing part of the weld! Shall I ask the pipe manufacturer for a WPS then?

What you mean is provisions of UW-26/27/28/29, which pertain to fabrication of the vessel, not materials.

Hi Konrad,

Sorry to reject, bot UG-11 does not allow welded standard items as a shell of a vessel.

And the footnote to UG-8 is quite clear with respect to welding pipes and tubes.

What Mauro suggests is a fix to an existing problem. Not a regular fabrication procedure.

Dirk, don't be sorry :-) It's always my pleasure to get some of your wisdom.

UG-11 does not apply to welded pipes. Welded pipes can be used as shells.
Footnote 3 to UG-8 applies to pipes welded using filler metal.
