Dear All,

I want to make a shell of a heat exchanger, original material for the shell is ASTM A 516 Grade 60, but i want to make it from API 5L Grade B..

Service of exchanger at shell side = cooling water

Please comment that

1) Can i use API 5L Grade B in place of ASTM A 516 Grade 60?
2) Can API 5L Gade B be used as pressure vessel?
3) Can API 5L Grade B be used in slight hydrogen serice?

Best Regards,

Nauman

Nauman,
it looks doable, but there is some paper work (and possibly physical too) to do for you.

1. Is API 5L grB the only standard that your plate has mentioned on its MTR?
2. What is your heat exchanger intended use: is it lethal or steam generator service? U-stamped? Other contractual/legal requirements pertaining to design codes? Can you give some basic data, media, temperatures, pressures, shell diameter, thickness, welding technique?
3. What data is available on the MTR?
4. Will you be able to conatct the Quality Control division of the steelmaker to ask additiional questions and have the answers on paper?

Regards
