Hi everyone,

This is the first time I'm posting here, up to this point I never knew this forum even existed! But I'm glad I found it.

My question relates to an air cooled exchanger that was fabricated without any third party QC verification, and no NDE. The exchanger tubes are welded to a header pipe via a compound weld, with the pipe surface bevelled, and the tubes not.

The design calculations assumed a joint efficiency of 1.0, but this joiint does not conform to any joint type in UW12. In addition no NDE was done on the exchanger during fabrication. My quesitons are :-

1. Are compound joints covered by ASME VIII?

2. What are the requirements for compound welds to have a joint efficiency of 1.0?

3. What are the typcial E values for compound welds.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum alfabob,

Are there any objections against considering these welds as Type No. (7) of Table UW-12?

In this case please have a look at note (7) too.
Code:
(7) There is no joint efficiency E in the design formulas of this Division for Category C and D corner joints. When needed, a value of E not greater than 1.00 may be used.

Michael
