Hello everybody,

I have to design one vertical storage silo (outdoor).
for designing a vertical storage silo what points should be taken care????

As silo is rest on three support legs and these three legs are welded to silo through one support plate.
so my que. is how do i know that the structure is capable of carry the whole load?

how do i find welding strength?

Hello nspat,

The ASME Code do not provide rules for your problem. See App. G
Code:
A vessel supported in a vertical or horizontal position will have concentrated loads imposed on the shell in the region where the supports are attached.
[...]
Calculations to resist the forces involved are not given here because they involve so many variables depending upon the size and weight of vessels, the temperature of service, the internal pressure, the arrangement of the supporting structure,
[...]
The details of supports should conform to good structural practice, ... [...]

Start with the common pressure vessel handbooks (e.g. Chuse & Carson, Megsey, Jawad & Farr), there you will find some guidance. Or ask someone (experienced) with an adequate program for support, this will save a lot of time. Usual designs can be covered with Compress or PVElite.

Please refer to DIN 1055 part 6 for silo design. Cylindrical to cone joint design is one of the most critical aspect of silo design.

For support design refer to some PV hand book as already advised by Michael. Depending on silo diameter/ thickness/ local loads you may consider leg or ring girder as support.

i agree it. Last month, i designed one vessel with saddle support. i use pvelite to calculate if it is efficient to support the whole vessel. but we have a stand Vessel support (JB/T 4712.1~4712.4-2007) in China. we can use it to check if it works. it states how to calculate the strength.
