Hi there, excuse my english.
I have to made an alteration on a lethal vessel. I have to replace the manhole by 20" long welding neck barril. The material of the vessel are P4 with P1. The vessel are previously PWHT, after the alteration i have to do UT and PT on weld between manhole and vessel. Can i do the NDE before PWHT ?
I did mot see anywhere, in code, if i Shall to do NDE before or after.

Thank you

Mr. Louis:

For VIII-1 requirements: Yes. You may perform NDE before PWHT.
Interpretation: VIII-1-98-09

I do not agree with shmulik.
Interpretation: VIII-1-98-09 has been cancelled out by VIII-1-98-09R.
Please also refer to UHA-33(b) & UHA-33(c).
In short, you may perform NDE before code required PWHT if UHA-33(b) or UH-33(c) allow, that is all.
Hope it helps.

Louis,

First of all, talk to the Owner/User of the vessel and the Authorized Inspector about doing a particular type of NDE. They might want a particular NDE done before or after PWHT. Sometimes they require NDE done both before and after PWHT. Sometimes NDE may be needed even before welding.

Second, since you mentioned "alteration", you should refer to a Repair Code for guidelines. ASME Section VIII Div. 1 is a "new construction" code. The only time you should refer to the original code of construction is when the Repair Code tells you so.

Javed Nasir,
I don't know why UHA-33 came into the picture, but Louis is talking about P1 & P4 materials. UHA-33 is irrelevant.

Unquote

Dr. Chris

I want a little correction regarding the statement of shmulik that interpretaion VIII-1-98-09 is still valid, it is true that this interpretation is still valid but when you also see what UHA-33 says.

The posts and replies to this thread are the reasons why many reference the first letter mnemonic of Always Sometimes Maybe Except.... for ASME.
