Dear Sir,

Is there any difference between loads on nozzle and piping loads on pressure equipment.

Loads on nozzles are also taken in general as loading imposed by nozzles on piping vs the other option i.e. piping loads are also generally considered on the surface of the equipment.

What is difference between above two highlighted points.

Please clarify and refer to any calculation or standards

Hi Osama

Can differentiate by two words .

1- loads on nozzle = Allowable.

Allowable given by Client's specification with diff. size of nozzle.

2- piping loads on pressure equipment.= Actual

Actual Is out put of Piping stress analysis on surface equipment.

And as simple Allowable > Actual.

Most of the time Loads on Nozzle and Piping loads on pressure equipment are same as the piping loads (connected to nozzle) are ultimately transmitted to equipment thru the nozzle where nozzle to equipment connection is considered as an anchor point.

Some of the times nozzle loads may be other than piping loads (eg any external attachment on nozzle, other than piping, instrument and/ or self load of nozzle itself including valve, blind cover etc. which is generally ignored)

Standard nozzle loads provided in client specifications can not be considered as allowable loads. In absence of detailed piping study these standard loads are provided based on previous experience and some rule of thumbs so that the equipment design incorporate these nozzle loads in design without waiting for actual piping loads and piping can limit their loads on the nozzle within these values.

There may be some cases when actual piping load may exceed these standard loads in some stress critical lines where keeping piping loads with in the standard load is not possible or require some special design/ requirement and therefore more cost.

In case equipment require some major change due to standard nozzle loads, actual piping loads may be requested which may be much less than standard loads.

I would like to add that defining an allowable nozzle load helps not only equipment designer but also becomes an input or spec for the piping engineer. There are cases where the piping stresses near the nozzle end will be as low as 20% or even less of the allowable values but still the nozzles may turn out to be not safe.
Hence providing a limiting load for the piping engineer helps him. But as already presented by others in earlier post, a repetition of nozzle analysis for the actual piping loads or revising piping support design to reduce the actual loads on the nozzle may often become essential / unavoidable
