Dear All,

Diffusion welding is added in Section IX under new paragraph QW-266 where QW-266 provides essential, non-essential and supplementary essential variables. Definition of diffusion welding is also added in QW-492. Welding variables related to diffusion welding have also been added in Article IV. This is just for your information.
Do integrally cladded plates (like SA-263, SA-264, SA-265) fall under diffusion welding?

Javed,

Diiffusion Bonding is a very special process, where the surfaces of two plates are pressed against each other and specially treated, so that the metal grains "grow together". Afterwards, if you do a microscopic examination, it looks like one plate. The process itself is compared to welding "slow and cold".

Cladding is usually made by rolling, overlay welding or by explosion. I have never seen diffusion bonding being used for cladding, but it would not be prohibited.

Hello Javed/Dr. Koelbl

Diffusion bonding is technically one of the best permanent joining process available today. The advantage is that the strength of the joint is equivalent to that of the parent material with a perfect finish.
Almost all materials and their combinations which includes difficult to join materials like Ceramics, Carbides etc can be joined by this process with ease.
This process can be best applied to cladding also.
The requirement of a vacuum atmosphere and a high degree of surface finish between mating parts is the main reason which affects the wide popularity of this process.
