Hello Everyone,
I have a query regarding design rules for external pressure in ASME Section VIII, Division 2 .The query is as given below

Clause 4.4 of ASME Section VIII, Division II Ed 2010 gives rules for design of shells under external pressure. Table 4.41 of ASME Sec VIII Div II Edition 2010 gives the maximum temperature limit these rules can be used. Now my question is what to do if the design temperature of a component exceeds by a minor amount ( atleast 1 °C ) the limit prescribed in Table 4.41. Can the rules still be used. Further to that what is the basis for defining the temperature limit for materials in Table 4.41 of ASME Sec VIII Div II

I would be very grateful to get clarification on the above

Thanks in anticipation

Regards

Yaseer

No, maximum temp as per Table 4. 4.1. In fact, if Vessel is U2 stamped then such vessel can't be stamped unless and until you prove with alternative method.
External pressure Calculation given in code is based Buckling strength formula, linear structural stability theory of buckling is used in preparation. for more detail pl. refer. J. Harvey.

Thanks sir for your guidance. But what does alternative method mean. Can I use the rules given in any other codes for ed AD2000 , ASME VIII Div 1 for eg.
