Hello Andy!!
I will try to answer your query:
Q1. Does anyone use Design By Analysis "DBA" approach?
A1. Yes! of course, i can quote tons of examples where design by
analysis approach is routinely employed, some notable examples
being:
1. Shells/Heads with ratio of opening to shell diameters exceeding code
allowable.
2. Using vastly different MOC on the same equipment i.e. C.S vessel with
high alloy nozzle connections.
3. Performing local load analysis.
FEA is a tool by which the above mentioned can be performed. With regards to your query on how it can be done i would recommend reading Appendix-4 of ASME Section VIII, Div.2 (uptil 2004 Edition) or Part 5 of ASME Section VIII, Div.2 (2007 Edition) in some depth. A DBA course is also held by the IMechE at the University of Strathclyde, please feel free to get in touch to obtain more details.
Regards,
Mayur
