Dear All,
As per ASME SEC VIII Div 1 Table UCS 66.1 , If SA 105 material is normalised and produced to fine grain practice it comes under curve C , However as per SEC VIII Div 1 for materials made to dimensional standard , no material cetificate is required and accepted based on Product marking.

In this instance hw we can verify fine grain practice requirement.
If the material is fully killed can we consider it is having fine grain structure.

Please clarify

Regards

Yes. you can accept as it is.

If you have MTR you can verify the Aluminium content in the heat analysis it shall be more than 0.020 % .

Ajimon,

Fine Grain practice is not required for SA-105, normalizing neither.

If the manufacturer of the vessel has purchased the forging with fine grain and normalizing, certification from the forging manufacturer is required, otherwise the receiving inspection is not easily done. Grain size can be determined with a McQaid Ehn test, but most vessel manufacturers find it too expensive for a simple flange.

Without proper MTR certification, just treat the forging as Curve B.

Fully killed does not mean fine grain structure
