 Post subject: Flange face cleaning

The raised face flanges we are using in our project is supplied with a black coloured protective coating on the flange face.
Do we need to remove this coating prior to installation?
If yes, please suggest the best method to remove the same without causing any damage to the serration area.

Factory protective coating may remain if record grooves are visible and will make a good seat (contact) of gasket to faying surface of opposing flange.
