I am qualifying an impact test procedure (-50) on 3/8" SA-516 Gr. 70 plate using GMAW and FCAW. We are using the Miller RMD setting on the welding machine for the GMAW root pass. I am told the RMD is a modified short-Circuiting arc process. My question is, will my base metal thickness qualified range be T to 1.1T or T to 2T. I am trying to get the largest range possible with one test. Thanks for your help.

Is RMD like STT? if yes it is short arc subject to limitations of the short arc.
