Dear friends,

Is there any impact test requirement in the PQR for filllet weld?It seems that only those weld with the thickness more than 16mm needs to perform impact test Per ASME section Ⅲ, if impact test is requires when performing welding qualification for fillet weld, what the weld thickness should be for fillet weld to see more or less than 16 mm?

I just wondering that... Who can give me some tips?

Really appreciate it!!!

Dephy,

Your point is not quite correct.
The impact test evaluation is base-metal oriented.

If the base material requires impacts, ALL WELDS to this material shall be qualified with impact tests, and all weld metal used as well. For the time being we do not consider the exemptions.
So even a 3mm fillet weld on your 20mm SA-516-70 plate requires impact test qualification.
The good new is that the fillet welds are usually qualified with the butt weld WPS, as long as the parameters are the same.

Thanks, DK,
I agree with you that"The impact test evaluation is base-metal oriented".
but impact test is specified only for joint that thickness exceeding 16mm Per NE4335.1(a) , why?how to explain about that??
