Hi Everyone,

Does ASME give any detail regarding the L/D ratio selection which designing a Pressure Vessel as per ASME Sec VIII Div I. I have seen designers mentioning that a L/D ratio between 1.3 and 1.7 is the best option. Is it correct?

This is basically to optimise the cost of the vessel.

I also came across an article regarding this. "an article written by J. Zigrang and N.D. Sylvester, professor and dean, respectively, at the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma. The piece appeared in the December 12, 1985, issue of Machine Design magazine".

We could discuss this matter in this forum, if anyones interested. I would request everyone to participate in this topic.

Regards,

Abhilash,
The only reason people write anything in forums is that they want to do it. So requesting anybody/everybody is rather your wish, not a cause for anyone to do anything.
[philosopher mood off]

Some good engineering codes (like this one http://www.udt.gov.pl/HTML/index.php?op ... Itemid=110) have provisions against bending of long-and-thin horizontal tanks, supported at their ends. Extreme example of this is a pipeline. Regarding optimisation of the material cost- not always 1kg of material costs the same. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy pipe than to roll and weld plate. But this affects freedom of choice in diameters. Sometimes this freedom has its cost as well. I'm afraid, there's no "golden rule" in general.
