Hi …just a quick question

I have a nozzle in a flat welded cover whose opening exceeds ½ the head diameter. UG-39(c)(1) refers me to Appendix 14 which gets into some pretty complicated( and ugly) calculations. Can I use UG-37 reinforcement calcs to prove that this large opening in this welded flat cover is adequate????

What are some thoughts on this???

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this.

Fernandez

Hello Fernandez,
I´m afraid you cannot use UG-37. UG-36(c)(2)(b) sends you to UG-39, and UG-39(c)(1) sends you to App. 14 when the size exceeds one-half the head diameter.

On the other hand App. 14 is no disadvantage because it allows much thinner thicknesses. However, you need a calculation program or at least an excel spreadsheet to perform such calculations in a reasonable time.
