Hallo,

According to ASME Sec VIII Div. 1, who will specify material for pressure parts for the construction of a pressure vessel? Is it the client or the manufacturer?

If the client leaves it to the manufacturer, and the manufacturer outsources the design work to a designer, should the manufacturer specify?

Auf Wiedersehen.

I would answer with a question: who is signing the MDR? He's the responsible one. Let him decide!

...but being more serious: I reckon that it has to be described in your Quality Handbook. Whatever is there, you must follow it!

Please refer ASME Sec VIII Div 2 Part 2.2.2 (g), Specifying Material of construction is mentioned under user's responsibility.

Even otherwise type of material such as CS, SS, DSS etc to be specified by the user based on their process media and metallurgy requirement since equipment fabricator/ designer does not know the complete process condition/ process media. Equipment fabricator/ designer can however resposnible for selecting material grade appropriate for the mechanical design condition.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your replies.

Can I as a user specify only "CS' as material for shell and dish. Or the user has to to be explicit and specify the material as per ASME Sec II Part A or Part D.

For example, if I specify just "CS", is it the responsibility of the designer to select the appropriate grade which may be SA 283 Gr. C or SA 516 Gr. 70.

Regards,
Sharjeel

Generic material type such as CS/ SS 304/ SS 316/ DSS is to be specifies by the user as a minimum and selection of grade can be left to the equipment designer.

It will be however easy for user to compare different offers if material grade is also specified by the user otherwise different vendor may come out with different grades and comparing offer/ cost will be difficult.

Regards
