Is it required by ASME sec. VIII or II, that for materials which require PWHT, must be ordered with Simulated Post-Weld Heat Treatment?

thanks in advance.

Malyl,

What type of material and what product? If carbon steel, refer to UCS-85. If the product is a standard fitting or flange, they are exempted. See UCS-85 for further exemptions and requirements.

Malyl,

Acc. to UCS-85(c) all material used in vessel shall be represented by test specimens which are subjected to HT as follows:
• same heat treatment above A1
• min. 80% of total time at temperatures
• manufacturer shall specify temperatures, time and cooling rates
• for nonimpact tested materials thickness < 75 mm simulation of cooling rates for HT below A1 is not required
• number of test and results as required by material spec.
• HT shall include all thermal treatments > 480°C
• HT not include local heating as thermal cutting, preheating, welding or heating below A1 of tubing and pipe for bending or sizing

This means you have to order the material with simulated heat treatment as mentioned above or the vessel manufacturer has to perform this simulated heat treatment on test specimen except for the following excemptions:
• Standard items acc. to UG-11(a) (catalogue parts)
• Materials assigned to P1.1 or P1.2 and Heat treatment during fabrication limited to PWHT below A1
• Other carbon steels and all low alloy steels in the annealed condition and Heat treatment during fabrication limited to PWHT below A1

For definition of annealing see ASME B31.1, paragraph 100.2. Please note the annealed materials are indicated by the letter A on mill certificate and material marking.
But I never saw (in Europe) a carbon or low alloy steel in this condition.

Additional exemptions see UCS-85(g) and UCS-85(i).

Dr.chris - it was general question, not specific material given.
Juergen Fleischfresser - thanks for your thorough reply.
