Dear Friends,

Suppose we carry out butt weld on 5 mm thick pipes / Plates, but during preparation of Tensile Test Coupon, the thickness of base metal and weld metal become. 4.5 mm due to any reason. Then what Max. thickness of Weld metal or Base metal can be said to be qualified ? 10 mm or 9 mm ?

I know the answer as per Section IX is 10 mm. But as per my opinion we are qualifying the procedure on the base of testing, so thickness of test coupon should be considered. Is there anything mentioned in Section IX for this situation ?

Yash,
Qualification range is based on nominal thickness of your test coupon.
If nominal thickness is 5 mm then you are qualified to 10 mm regardless of the machined thickness of your machined sample.
