Is it possible to qualify multiple(1G/2G/3G/4G-combined) positions (Welder Performance Qualification) in a single plate test coupon?

This is a good question.

Have a close look at QW-461.9. I suppose in theory, one plate could be placed in several positions throughout testing, however there could be limitations on the deposited thickness qualified for each position, as well as some other essential variables.

NO. You should apply to pipe weld in Pos. 6G which qualifies for plate as well.

qaqcmpm,
You can qualify multiple positions on the one plate, you just cannot qualify all 4 you have noted.
25 mm plate Double Vee or Double U in the 4G position with the second side backgouged or background and then the second half is completed in the 3G position.
This then qualifies you for F,V & O so there is no need to include the 1G.

Shane

Gentlemen (you too Shane :lol: );

qaqcpm asked whether it is possible to qualify in multiple positions with plate. The simple answer is yes, it is possible and permitted.

Gonzaga, your opinion is a good opinion and a better option, but a wrong answer.

I appreciate you admit it is a better option, actually this was my goal. I don't think people are writing question just for fun. I do not answer to a quiz. I have other more interesting things to do.

Jon,
Qaqcmpm asked if a single test plate can be used for multiple positions (1G,2G,3G & 4G). I responded yes to the question but noted you could only do 3 of the 4 noted.
The issue is practicality, why on earth would you want to do it.
I partially agree with Gonzaga, if you want to qualify for all positions with one coupon you should do a 6G. However, you are correct in that it is possible and permitted.
Can you perform a weld test while standing on your head ? Yes, It is possible and it is permitted but it is also totally impractical.
Regards,
Shane
