I live in Canada and I am wondering where I can get study information for the National Board Inspection Certification... I have already contactd the National Board Website and there is no information on study materials other than taking the course in Ohio... Unfortunately due to time restraints this course is not available for me...
I have my CWI and Welding Examiner Certification this certification would be an incredible asset to me. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Ikatherien,

That is a correct statement from the National Board.

The National Board course is structures for the Authorized Inspection Agency (Insurance Company) and State Inspection Agency (State goverment).

Tha National Board issue various certification for AI, ANI, ANII. To be a commission Inspector you have to pass the examination administered by the National Board. Even you pass the National Board exam, your employer has to designate you as qualiifed Inspector.

Ikatherien,

To take the exam for AI or Authorized Inspector you need to read ASME Code Section I Power Boiler, Section V- NDE, and Section IX - Welding, Section II Material. These are ASME Code book.

Thank you for your reply , however I am seeking study material (sample questions that may be covered on the exam) I am well aware of the codes that are required for the exam.
I am also aware that the questions are derived from code, I would like more clarity for focus on the specific areas covered.

Ikatherien,

It has been awhile when I took my National board exam. As far as I remembered there were two part test math and multiple choice.

For math, the format was you to calculate either required thickness or required pressure for a for a pressure vessel. Then you have to use the code book to figure it out, the formula, material tensile strength, etc. This is a time test.

For multiple choice it may have question about penetrameter, diameter range fro welder qual, or tensile strength for a certain materials. The bottom line is you have to be familiar with the code and where to look for a certain paragraph. This is also a time test and an open book for both.

I hope this will help you.

lkatherien,
Unless you are lucky and can get someone to send you their "recent" study materials, you would be better off accessing the many schools and training programs for this certification.

It is always best to stay with current study materials for training as the Codes change year after year.

One foolproof way to guarantee a passing the exam is knowing how to navigate the Codes for the answer. Similar to the way an attorney prepares to argue the law by quoting statutes and the like. If you can give a paragraph reference for almost any question, you are guranteed to do well. Just know how to navigate all the Codes.
