I am designing Class 1 valves for nuclear power plants as per ASME sec III Div.1.

Is it mandatory to do design by analysis as per NB-3200 for class 1 valves? If not requried how Can I justify.

Yes,

It is mandatory to have design by analysis for Class 1 valve. Read NB-3211.

Good luck

thank you for your reply.

But NB-3200 talks only about how to do design by analysis and its acceptability. It doesn't say about its applicability.

If you see NB-3300 - Vessel design, ASME says NB-3200 is mandatory for acceptability of a vessel design (See NB-3311).

In pump design acceptability (NB-3412.1), ASME says either of NB-3200 or Appendix II shall be met for design acceptability.

Similarly in Valve acceptability, (NB-3511), ASME doesn't say that NB-3200 is mandatory for design acceptablity. It says only NB-3211 (d) (for prevention of non-ductile fracture) shall be met.

So can I understand that NB-3200 is not mandatory for valve design?

Please elucidate.
