As illustrated above, a kind of joint in a steam boiler drum, the nozzle is a forging with flange, thickness of the flange is 100mm, thickness of thicker portion of nozzle is 50mm, thickness of shell is 100mm.
what's the category for this kind joint? category D?
It is a butt weld joint, so 100% RT is required as per UW11a(2)?, if it is, how to perform the RT.
Thanks

Can you specify joint design i.e. by giving reference from various acceptable joint sketches in UW16?

YES, it is a Category D butt weld joint
It is a butt weld joint, so 100% RT is required as per UW11a(2)?
YES, full radiography is required on the Category D butt weld joint.
if it is, how to perform the RT.
You perform the RT the same way as you would RT any butt weld joints. If you cannot obtain an interpretable radiograph, you could invoke Code Case 2235-9 (Ultrasonic Examination in Lieu of Radiography) if it is acceptable to your Jurisdiction and Client/Owner... http://www.sonotronndt.com/pdf%5CASME.pdf

Sorry to interfere, guys, but I read BOILER DRUM !?!

This is the Section VIII Forum for PRESSURE VESSELS. I would like to make sure that no reader is getting confused by this discussion.

If you are really talking boiler drum, please think about Section I and PW rather than UW paragraphs. In Section I there are no Categories, and all butt joints are RTed anyway.

Only machines like Unfired steam boileres will be in section VIII, ad in this case the special service of UW-2 comes into play.

Sorry, I have to make an explanation, it is a real drum in a boiler system, but the clients subcontracted parts to different factory, of course the drum, and they allowed the manufacturer of drum to make the design under ASME VIII-1, that's the story came out.
