Dear Sirs,
I remember that there is one interpretation which specify that:
for thick heads normalized after forming, if the plates material have subjected to normalization, test specimen was not required for the head nomalization, could anyone tell me which interpretation?
many thanks!

Hi, Fred check if the following interpretaion works.

Interpretation: VIII-1-95-50
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1 (1992 Edition, 1993 Addenda); UCS-79(d)
Date Issued: March 13, 1995
File Number: BC94-684
Related Documents:

Question (1): A cold formed head has to be heat treated to fulfill the requirements of UCS-79(d) in Section VIII, Division 1. Does the term "heat treated subsequently" mean just after forming and prior to any other operation?

Reply (1): No.

Question (2): If Reply (1) is no, then will PWHT in accordance with UCS-56 satisfy the requirements of UCS-79(d) following welding of the head to the vessel?

Reply (2): Yes.

thanks for reply,
but it is not the interpretation i meant, which specify under what circumstance test specimen for head normalization can be exempted from UCS-85.

Normalizing shall have to perform on the test specimen as per my opinion.

Consider that SA 516 GR 70 is the material & as per material spec above 40 mm thickness it is supplied in normalized condition.

Normalizing is used to refine grains which have been deformed through cold work which means after cold forming of 40 mm THK dish heads (UCS-79) you will do the normalizing to refine the grain structure.
In this case your material is already received in normalized condition, after that once again you will do the normalizing after cold forming, then how you can be sure that after second normalizing your allowable stresses are same as of your received material?

Note - Normalizing can improve ductility and toughness of the steel, small grains are formed which give a much harder and tougher metal with normal tensile strength and not the maximum ductility achieved by annealing.

Normalized plates and normalizing of formed head are two different requirements. Normalizing of formed heads is not a code requirement and most of the time governed by client specification.

For the requirement of test coupon for normalized formed head please refer to UCS 85 (c)

Code:
The material used in the vessel shall be rep-resented by test specimens which have been subjected to the same heat treatments above the lower transformation temperature and post weld heat treatment except as pro-vided in

Since normalizing temperature is more that the lower transformation temperature, test coupon is required in case of normalized heads.

Normalisation is not a code requirement for UCS material .
What is usually done is "Stress Relief " at about 600 deg C.- See UCS 56

Code does not use term Stress Relief . The term used is PWHT or Heat treatment
Also note that Production test coupons are not required for PWHT. See UW 40 .

Test coupons are needed for Normalising Heat treatment (UG 85)
