I am designing the Power boiler as per ASME Sec. I ED 2010 it got rectangular openings in its radiation unit, the nozzle neck of the opening is subject to external pressure, i could not locate the rules for the thickness verification for external pressure for a non circular/cylindrical geometry. can any one provide the basis for such design. the boiler required to be certified under 'S' Stamp.

thanks in anticipation.

Regards,

PED

Pedconsultant,

this is a typical application of rules not given in the Code. Sounds like you are a subcontracted design engineer. I am sorry to say, acceptance exceeds your powers as a consultant.

The manufacturer may apply PG-16.1, subject to acceptance of the AI, who will perform the inspection. It is certianly upon the AI's experience and knowledge, how far he can go and what he can accept, but in a good AIA, there will be backoffice support for the AI in the field to support his judgement.
