Dear Members

For Pressure vessel Nozzle to shell connectiin weld joint, what is the basis for fillet weld size?

As per sec viii div 2, Table 4.2.10, fillet size is >/= min(0.7tn, 6mm).

Please refer the attachment.

For example, if the nozzle hub thickness is 160mm, whether a fillet size of 6mm is feasible? or can we use 0.7 x 160 mm as fillet weld size. (is such a higher value is applicable for a fillet weld)

For information, the nozzle is 30" dia & shell is 80 mm thk.

Regards
vgsh

Hello,

min[0.7tn, 6mm)] means the minimum required throat dimension of the fillet weld is the smaller of "0.7 x tn" and "6 mm". Thus you do not need to have a thicker fillet than 6 mm, however, you are allowed to choose a thicker value.

Dear All
Pl. note 6mm fillet is not only requirement. Clause no. 4.5.14 -> Strength of Nozzle Attachments Weld check is mandatory. No exception unlike DIV-1 UW-15(b)
Only, Butt-welded Lip type Nozzles are excepted from requirement of 4.5.14.
