Dear All,

We are going to weld two plates with thickness 20 mm in position 1G. Groove V or X weld.

Does this weld qualify any pipe diameter? or do we have to make one more procedure on pipe?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hivris

Typically this variable would only apply to performance qualifications and as such, for procedure, all diameters should be qualified.

Hi Jon,
How's life in "Freezingcoldistan" ?
Got a little confused with your reply.
Do you mean "...all diameters would be qualified" and not "...all diameters should be qualified." ?
To clarify for Hivris plate will qualify for pipe and vice versa for Procedure qualification but for Performance qualification Table 461.9 applies,
Regards,
Shane

Hivris,

basically diameter is not an essential variable, you weld on plate can qualified all range of diameter, but please do consider also range of position qualified.

if impact testing is not required, your procedure qualified all range of diameter pipe and all position.

If impact testing is required, your procedure can only cover all range of pipe diameter welded in 1G rotated position.

Regards,
Noel Tan

Shane, of course, you are correct. If responding only with regard to ASME IX, then yes, testing on plate WOULD qualify all diameters of pipe also.

By the way, Kazakhstan has been very hot lately but is finally beginning to cool just slightly. I think the High today is 28C. Next week I'll be flying into Christchurch to visit wife and family and I was told this morning it was a rosy warm 10C.
