Dear Reader

So far I was under the perception that a welder who is qualified in 3G is qualified for 1G and 2g automatically. Similarly a 6G qualified welder can weld 3 G ,2G likewise.
But I was instructed by an auditor that each and every position has to be qualified separately which means a 6G or 3G qualified welder cannot weld 2G. Can anyone advise

Thanks for your help

Azar,

First I am assuming we are talking about welder qualification under Section IX, right?
If so, I would move this topic to the Section IX forum.

However, there is a distinction of TEST POSITIONS (1G, 3G, 6G, etc.) and PRODUCTION POSITIONS (Flat, Horizontal, Vertical, Overhead).

In Section IX there is a very clear table specifying the qualified positions depending on the test position. QW-461.9.

This says that a welder who welded a 3G test plate is qualified for
- FLAT and VERTICAL Plate and pipe 24" and over,
- Flat PIPE under 24", and
- Fillet welds in F, H and V position.

An auditor should be able to understand the table. However, an orgnisation employing welders must be able to demonstrate the qualification and prove evidence that the qualification is correct.

Assuming ASME Sec IX Code is referenced...

Answer: NO, as Dr Koelbl pointed out only Flat & Vertical.

Answer: There is no 3G position in pipe, however a 6G qualifies all positions in plate & pipe regardless of O.D.

Not regardless of O.D.

Perhaps I should rephrase my statement;

Regardless of the outside diameter of the pipe, the 6G position qualifies for all positions of welding.

Certifications and titles can prove just much to get you an interview or a need for demonstration to further prove your level of knowledge over it.

There is more left for you to do in order to provide an accurate description of what thing you can weld and up to what level you are able to work around for.

Companies have different requirements and you just have to check which ones apply for you.
