PQT with multiple process ( GTAW & SMAW) as per ASME Sec IX

A PQR is carried out on a test coupon of thickness 8" dia and 8.38 mm WT is welded with GTAW process and deposited weld thk is 4.5 mm, and balance is welded with SMAW process i.e. 3.88 mm and the PQT is qualified sucessfully

Please specify the qualified "T" ( Base Metal Thickness) and "t" ( deposited weld metal thickness) limits with the above PQR, in case impact requirement and no impact requirements for carrying out the production welds and to specifiy on the WPS

Hi kvc_eil,

T= 8.38 mm qualifies:
with impact requirements for 8.38 - 16.76 mm
without impact requirements for 1.5 mm - 16.76 mm

GTAW t=4.5 mm qualifies for t max. 9 mm and
SMAW t=3.88 mm qualifies for t max. 7.76 mm with and without impact test requirements.

Hi Juergen Fleischfresser

Thank you for your response and advise.

However I have a small query.

As while the deposited weld metal thickness (t) for both GTAW & SMAW is 4.5mm and 3.88 mm respectively in 8.33 mm WT test coupon which is less than 6.0 mm , please clarify the qualified thickness range of the base metal for each process as per QW403.6 with impact requirements.

My understanding is 0.5 T to 2T i.e. 2.25 mm to 9.0 mm for GTAW and 1.94 mm to 7.76 mm for SMAW process as per QW 200.4 (a) (2) .

Accordingly can I adopt the above WPS/PQR for welding of base metal thickness of the above range for the given processes ( GTAW & SMAW) with out any further qualification.

Also the significance and applicability of QW 200.4(b) for the above case may please be clarified.

As clarified by you in case the base metal thickness (T) range is qualified only from 8.38 to 16.76 with impact requirements , is it required to qualify a separate WPS for less than 8.38 mm base metal thickness.

Thanking you

Regards,

K.V.Chalapathi

Hello Chalapathi

I think you are confused with the different clauses of ASME Section IX. Juergen Fleischfresser has given a correct and accurate reply for the query.

Regarding your last query, A seperate procedure shall be qualified for Base metal thk below 8.38mm.

@ kvc_eil, please follow the range specified by Juergen Fleischfresser.
