Dear Sir,

Base metal - SA 387 Gr 11 CL 2
P No. 4 & Gr No 1
Welding Processs = GTAW + SMAW (Root GTAW and rest SMAW)

Preheat parameters mentioned in PQR is as follows:

a) Preheat temperature = 250 deg C
b) Interpass temperature = 300 deg C Max
c) Intermediate Postheating = 350 deg C for 4 hr (Cooling under insulation)

Question:
How to review above a,b and c points according to ASME Sections as i have checked Appendix R i.e. R3 (ASME Section VIII Div 1), it only mentions 121 deg C preheat temperature for P No.4 and Gr.1.

Appreciate detailed reply, please

Best regards
Osama

You need to note that Appendix R is non mandetory and to be used as a guidance. Normally Sa 387 Gr 11 Class 2 needs pre heating. You have not specified thickness under consideraion. Remember that Section IX allows pre heat temperature 55 Deg C less in Production WPS than what is used while welding PQR test coupon. Hence if you apply 250 Deg C then u need to do minimum 195 Deg C in Production WPS. So I need to know the hickness involved and 121 Deg C sounds well.

When you are doing pre heating and thickness is not that high then I dont think you need intermediae postheating. You may refer UCS 56 tables to know PWHT requirement since WPS shall essentially meet Construction Code requirement and not of Section IX which is a reference book. Please let me know thickness so that I can put my views more clearly.
