Dear Members,

Regarding to material as above(SA 203 E), I refer to the ASME Section II, part D table 1A 2007 Edition, this material fall in P-No. 9B, Group No. 1 and then I go through to the ASME Section VIII part UCS-56 (Requirement for Post weld Heat Treatment). From table UCS-56, Note 3(a) Material over 16mm nominal thickness is mandatory for PWHT.

As per my design shell thickness is only 12.7mm, So as per my understanding PWHT is not required. I'm correct? :?: because some people argue about that.

Could anyone support me regarding this matter?

Best Regards,

Faizol.

Your interpretation is partly correct. please read carefully para 3(a) and (b)

for below 16mm thk PWHT is required unless welding procedure qualification described in UCS 56(a) has been made in equal or grater thk of production weld.

or all thk required if falls under UW2

Hi Faizol,

the answer of Raghurambathula is clear. So I think is time to take the code and read the paragraphs which were referenced by Raghurambathula.

However:
-if the WPS for this weld is supported by a PQR with a test coupon thickness 12.7 mm or greater and UW-2 is not applicable the seam is exempted from PWHT
-if the WPS for this weld is supported by a PQR with a test coupon thickness less than 12.7 mm or/and UW-2 is applicable the seam is not exempted from PWHT
