Hi Everyone,

I would immensely appreciate if someone could guide me to interpret correctly QW 283.4. I could not quite get it. QW 283.3 limitation for minimum thiciness of BUTTERING shall be that qualified if <5mm (after machning) is logical for any further reduction in thickness may reveal diluted metal more than that assessed during qualification. BUT I do not know why I just could not interpret 283.4. I am still studying it. Request your help.

It seems from QW 283.4(A) that the original thickness is to be maintained & the Heat Input as well, in case the butterred thickness is less than 5 mm. Though by definition, an essential variable is one whose change will affect the mechanical property of the weldment. Considering that - what harm to the buttering or the subsequent weld joint could it be if I increase the thickness of buttered weld metal ?

Please excuse me the length of the post.

Regards

Did you consider what quoted herebelow?
<QW-283.1 Scope. This paragraph only applies when
the essential variables for the buttering process are different
than the essential variables for the process used for subsequent
completion of the joint. Common examples are
(a) the buttered member is heat treated and the completed
weld is not heat treated after welding
(b) the filler metal used for buttering has a different
F-Number from that used for the subsequent completion
of the weld>

Thanks Gonzaga for your time.

I will revert very soon with the logic. Was out of station for sometime & could not devote time to it.

Thanks again.
