Dear all,

One question puzzled me as below,

Provided:Material A,B, C and D are assigned to P-no. X, according to Section IX 2007, and I coducted then a PQR test useing material A. So, according to Section IX 2007, material B, C and D can be covered by this PQR.

But in 2010 edition, material A was reassigned to P-no.Y (including material E F G).

Question: If I continue to use that PQR, which was tested in 2007, according to 2010 edition (QW420 states this use is allowed), which P-number above can be covered? P-no. X, Materials B,C and D, or P-no. Y, materials E,F and G?

How do you understand the reassignment of P-number in QW420? Can someone please give me a detailed interpretation for this question?

Thanks very much.

Allen.

I have yet to receive the 2010 Edition so was unaware that there was a P Number 2, which would be the first time in well over 20 years of using ASME IX that I've seen a P2 material.

In any case, that doesn't matter.

I had a similar situation a few years back and I simply made an editorial note on the PQR and WPS that the material had been re-assigned and went forward using the latest number.

Absolutely legal and lets your customers knmow your on top of your reviews.

Hi,

Sorry.

"P-no.1"/"P-no.2", I used here just was intended to help me to present my question, they are not the real objects in the code, just like P-no.A/P-no.B.

My question is how to use provious PQR and its WPS, after the reassignment of P-no. of material on that PQR.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up, I had to go back and re-read the addenda notes and thought I'd missed something. In any case, my original response still stands and is valid, make an editorial notation on both the PQR and WPS, it will help avoid future questions.

Hi,

I still have trouble how to operate by using QW-420, can you answer me for below question?

"......Provided:

Material A,B, C and D are assigned to P-no. X, according to Section IX 2007, and I coducted then a PQR test useing material A. So, according to Section IX 2007, material B, C and D can be covered by this PQR.

But in 2010 edition, material A was reassigned to P-no.Y (including material E F G).

Question:

If I continue to use that PQR, which was tested in 2007, according to 2010 edition (QW420 states this use is allowed), which P-number above can be covered? P-no. X, Materials B,C and D, or P-no. Y, materials E,F and G?......"

Thanks.

Hi,

I think it is time to read the code, QW-200.2(c):
Code:
Changes to the PQR. Changes to the PQR are not permitted except as described below. It is a record of what happened during a particular welding test. Editorial corrections or addenda to the PQR are permitted. An example of an editorial correction is an incorrect P-Number, F-Number, or A-Number that was assigned to a particular base metal or filler metal. An example of an addendum would be a change resulting from a Code change. For example, Section IX may assign a new F-Number to a filler metal or adopt a new filler metal under an established F-Number. This may permit, depending on the particular construction Code requirements, a manufacturer or contractor to use other filler metals that fall within that particular F-Number where, prior to the Code revision, the manufacturer or contractor was limited to the particular electrode classification that was used during qualification. Additional information can be incorporated into a PQR at a later date provided the information is substantiated as having been part of the original qualification condition by lab record or similar data.
All changes to a PQR require recertification (including date) by the manufacturer or contractor.

The above paragraph is self-explanatory.

Hope that helps.

Mr. Juergen,

Thank you for your reminding. I had refered to QW-200.2(C) but still was confused after I read.

But I have limited English reading ability to understand text of QW-420 as below(added in 2010 edition):

"......provided the WPS is revised to limit the materials qualified for welding to those assigned to the new P- or S-number(s) and Group number(s) for the specific material(s) originally used for the procedure qualification test coupon......."

That is why I arose this kind of question.

Thanks.

My understanding is that PQR test for P-no. 1 certain material, so all materials from P-no. 1 are qualified.

If there is(are) one(some) material(s), from P-no.1 reassigned to another P-no. in later edition, We can continue to use that PQR, providing we remove the reassigned material(s) from WPS. No matter the reassigned is the one selected and used in the test of that PQR

Is this right?

Thanks.
