Hello Everybody,

I have a query related to RT1, RT2.
We confirm RT1 when all A, B category welds are fully radiographed and J.E in design considered as 1.
What is the extend of radiography to be carried out to satisfy RT2? Does UW11(b)(5) play a role in RT2? What shall be J.E considered in design?

This is a big question. It depends. Please take a look at appendix L, there are lots of examples there. Hope this helps.

Dear Amitesh

Yes UW-11(5)(b) plays the role. You may please go through UG-116 of ASME section VIII Div (1) for the definition of RT2.

To summurize the definition of RT2:
1. Full RT on Catagory A & D Joints
2. Catagory A & B joints of type 1 or 2
& Catagory B & C joints which intersect Catagory A joint to be Spot Radiographed.

If the above two conditions are satisfied then you are using RT2 type for your vessel and you will take JE=1 in your thickness calculaitons.

Ikram,

Assume shell is seamless (say it is made of a seamless pipe) and its heads are butt welded end caps of B16.9.
Apparently it looks that category B joints do not intersect A joint because there is no A joint as you know shell is seamless. In this case, it is considered A joints be virtual and spot radiography of B joints shall be required for RT-2 and for J.E=1.
Further, I like to add that many design engineers call the spot of UW-11(a)(5)(b) as a "Quality Shot".

Another case, you mentioned on the drawing that spot RT is required for the vessels and heads are seamless, you cannot take J.E =1 for the heads even being seamless unless you take quality shot(s). Quality Shot shall not included in the vessel overall spot RT. It is an additional shot.

Ikram, Are you from FFC?

Dear Nasir

Thanks for your further clarification. Yes i am from FFC. I have asked a question relating to the general industrial practices/guide line for the selection of column skirt flare angle. You may please look into the query and let me know accordingly.

Best Regards
