SA-105 flange Product marking and Certification.

Is this in accordance with the code?
I have the above mentioned flange and as we all know it must conform to the material spec, 90% of the time I get all Test reports chems, mechs, and heat treat. Some times I get a Certificate of compliance only stating the material Grade and flange type (5" 150# ) with a statement that the material meets ASME specs.
Being accustom to receiving MTRs with chems and mechs im a little weary about just a C of C but..........
Do I really need MTRs to accept this flange?
Here is why I ask... SEC II Part A SA-105
12. Certification.
Identification marking - for forgings made to Blah blah (then says) application of identification marks as required in specification A 961 shall be the certification that the forgings have been furnished in accordance with the requirements of this specification.
So as long as all the required marking is on this flange can I accept it?

Any input would be appreciated.

Section II Part A is very clear about certification when you refer SA105. Marking shall be as per MSS-SP-25.

Please note that forgings made by renowned manufacturers always meet certification and marking requirements.

So, let me see if I have a good idea of what’s going on with this.
If I have a plate say SA-516 GR70 according to ug-93 (A) (1)
I MUST have an MTR or C of C with Chems and Physicals on them for review….Correct?
Now UG-93 (a)(2) For all other product forms the material shall be accepted as complying with the material spec if the spec provides for marking of each piece.
The plate seems to be easily understandable, but im unsure about the flanges.
I have gone over what was recommended but im still unsure.
Each flange is marked with the required information, so am I correct that this satisfies the code requirement for use. Without any MTR/or C of C
Please advise
Mike
In some cases i see when test reports are required? Will the code tell me when it is required? and if so where will i find this?

Yes, I think your understanding is right. Now go to:
SA-105 12.1
SA-961 19.1
SA-961 20.1

If your flanges are marked per these requirements- you don't need any paper (well, you will get the invoice, though). Give here what is exactly physically marked- we can try to go through it together.

PS who knows what exactly means the superscript "2" after first comma in UG-93(a)(1)?

I am surprised that no one is talking about MSS-SP-25. When manufaturer of the flange follows requirements of MSS-SP-25 then in fact MTC is not needed. The essence of ASME Secton VIII is that the finally Manufacturer of the vessel is completely responsible and language of MDR in Certificate of Shop Compliance is very clear. In fact AI also signs MDR to best of his belief with zero liability.

In case of failure, forging manufacturer is completely out of scene and Vessel manufacturer is always in main focus. Hence in my opinion, experience of QC Inspector of Manufacturer is vital while carrying out incoming inspection of forgings.

mike,

If your SA-105 flange is a standard ASME B16.5 or B16.47 flange, refer to UG-11(a)(1). In part it says...

"Pressure parts, such as...flanges,...welding necks,...shall NOT require inspection, identification in accordance with UG-93(a) or (b), or Partial Data Reports...
Parts made to either an ASME/ANSI standard or Manufacturer's standard shall be marked with the name or trademark of the parts manufacturer and such other markings as are required by the standard. Such markings shall be considered as the parts Manufacturer’s certification that the product complies with the material specifications and standards indicated and is suitable for service at the rating indicated."

For the required marking of ASME B16.5 or B16.47 flanges refer to paragraph 4 of said standards.

Hope this helps

akonrad,

The superscript "2" refers to a footnote in page 9 (under UG-8). The footnote says..."The term "plate" for the purpose of this usage includes sheet and strip also."

Yes, now I see it. Initially I found footnote 2 under U-1, totally irrelevant. It's just the wrong "2" :-)
Thanks
