In case of stacked exchanger (horizontal), top exchanger is mounted on bottom exchanger, the load transfer is through ribs / vertical stiffners. (Even during seismic loading, bending will be accomplished by tension in some stiffeners and compression in other stiffeners. (ofcourse the two saddles will be bolted together and bolts will take tension).

My query is as we have ribs or vertical stiffeners in the bottom exchanger just below the corresponding ribs / vertical stiffners of saddle in top exchanger, the bottom bearing plate of both saddles (which are bolted together) need not be designed as per book by Moss.

The thickness can be less than that computed as per Moss (which is applicable for bearing plates resting on ground with anchor bolts)

Can anyone comment on this please

Thanking You and With regards
