He,

Source Material is Metallic Material used to be converted into Section III Material.

For example a billet of steel, purchased from the steelmill by a forging shop.

The forging shop shall be qualified as MO or certified by ASME with a QSC. After forging, heat treatment, examination and testing, they will issue the CMTR certifying the Material. The Source Material Certifcate indicating the heat analysis shall be attached to the CMTR as identified attachment.

The steelmill must be qualified by the Forging shop as a Supplier of Source Material.

So Source Material is always the metal used to produce the Material.
Actually all Material has got source Material, except for castings, they are their own source Mateiral.
Please regard the Edition 2010 changes in the Code, where the term Qualified Source Material was introduced.

Thank you for your reply.
It is a coincidence that, just 30 minutes before I read your reply, I know the term Qualified Source Material is introduced in the latest edition of ASME code

I also need your reply for the following two illustrations:
1. When a forging is made from a ingot (ingot is made by Aproved supplier), we say the ingot this source material. right?

2. When a bolt is made with a round bar (round bar is made by Approved supplier) only by machining, can we say the bar is source material ?or just material?
thanks
