Dear All

I am confused about present status of TEMA standard;

Is TEMA merged in ASME sec. VIII-1 (in UHX ) and so there should be given no more reference of TEMA as it is a part of ASME?

Thanking in anticipation !

Faisal

Hello Faisal,

maybe it´s confusing, however, the 9th edition of the TEMA Standard refers to ASME Section VIII-1.
Code:
RCB-1.13 CONSTRUCTION CODES
The individual vessels shall comply with the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1, hereinafter referred as the Code. [...]

This means for a 9th edition TEMA heat exchanger you have to run a UHX calculation.

In hierarchy of standards - TEMA was always in a position of a recommendations standard, not a construction code.
Manufacturer is obliged to it only when it been agreed with client.

In preface to 9th Edition:
Quote:
In response to the introduction of Part UHX of ASME Sct. VIII, Div. 1, much of the tubesheet design information formerly contained in TEMA Para. RCB-7 has been moved to TEMA Appendix A.

The headline of App. A is: "Non-Mandatory Appendix A - Tubesheets".

Quote:
The following rules have been included as a design method for tubesheets for heat exchangers that are not designed per ASME code. It is not intended that these rules be used in addition to ASME rules.

TEMA is NOT a part of ASME.

TEMA was never a construction design Code except tubesheet design earlier. Now Tubesheet design is also covered in ASME UHX Part. So when design code is ASME, then tubesheet must be designed per ASME UHX Part. However, if client insist then you may have to design tubesheet for both the Codes and take conservative thickness.

Irrespective of tubesheet design, TEMA covers so many other requirements and recommendations for various TEMA classes R, C, B exchangers in terms min. shell thk, boltings, gasket width, tube bundle requirements etc. So TEMA still have a lots of importance.

Thanks.
