Hello.

Where in the ASME Sec VIII Div. 1 do we have information regarding machining tolerances?

Where in the ASME Sec IX do we have information regarding welding tolerances?

Thank you very much for your reply.

Any information would be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Sharjeel

Typically the Code does not talk in detail about geometrical tolerances. ONe example I can think of as an example is that Code refers to out of roundness should not exceed +/-1%.

Detailed geometrical tolerances are typically given in client/ Engineering Contractor standards.

I have not exactly understood welding tolerances. Is it pertainng to the weld detail?

hope this helps.

Sharjeel,

Tolerances are addressed in the Foreword, and in the fabrication sections of UG, UW, etc.

For machining of wallthicknesses, the manufacturer is responsible to make sure that the finished vessel has the required minimum wall. The undertolerance is zero.

For welding tolerances, what exactly do you want to know?

Thank you very much Jehan and Dr. Koebl.

I really appreciate it.

I read it in one fabrication drawing the following note.

"TOLERANCES:
1. UNSPECIFIED TOLERANCES FOR MACHINING AS PER DIN 7168-M-S
2. UNSPECIFIED TOLERANCES FOR WELDING AS PER DIN 13920 BF. "

Hence I raised this particular query.

Regards,
Sharjeel

Sharjeel:

The below standards you have mentioned are German standards and I presume that these may be available only in German language. I have never come across these.

Nevertheless, I am confident that Dr. Koelbl will be able to address your query in a much better way.

Herr Koelbl. Dankishen !! [I am from India and thus Dr. Koelbl please excuse my German. I never had any formal education in German language.] :D

regards,

Jehan

ASME Sec IX is only referance code, not a construction code.

one must refer to constrcution code for Welding tolearnces (or any other fabrication telerances) , for e.g UW 35 for butt welds or UW36 for fillets in ASME sec VIII div1
