Gas cooler was fabricated using
material -- SA 543 Gr.B Cl 1
thk -- 53mm

Neither PWHT nor temper bead welding was performed as per ASME VIII div.2.
After 1 month of service the closing seam & the nozzle weld near the seam experiences transverse crack

Question 1 -- Is this is due to high residual stresses on the weld (or) the vessel should have been PWHT by the manufacturer?

Question 2 -- What is the purpose of using Boss type nozzle for this cooler?

Cool, looks like a good proof that PWHT has a meaning.

Isn't it mandatory for the material and thickness?

sorry for my late reply.

Please Refer ASME VIII,Div 2(2007 edition), part 6 - Fabrication requirements,Table 6.17 Note-2,which implies PWHT is neither required nor prohibited.

Kareem, I have no answer neither, sorry. But now looks like a metallurgist diploma has a meaning :-)

Several petrochemical companies(Ethelene glycol plant) using the reactor of this material are running with transverse cracks(many in numbers in one circular seam).

Already a petrochemical company in my place has ordered a new vessel (replacement) of material SA 302 Gr.C
